"When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, he doesn’t just sit down and eat. He must first prepare his master’s meal and serve him his supper before eating his own. And the servant is not even thanked, because he is merely doing what he is supposed to do. In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are not worthy of praise. We are servants who have simply done our duty.’"


That puts things in pretty clear perspective. Too many – particularly parents – feel they “deserve” their own separate life of pleasure and luxury. I can’t count the number of divorces of family and friends I’ve seen come out of this attitude, the number of now faithless and unchurched families who’ve given up on God because He doesn’t fit into their hockey or soccer schedule. We’re servants to our God, to our children, to our spouse first; we don’t do it to earn favor, or to earn thanks, but because it is our duty. Only after we have fulfilled that duty should we think of satisfying our own separate desires.
